The patrón saint of Istán (Málaga) is San Miguel for whom a week long of
celebrations takes place in his honor.
Istán is located within Malaga province, inland from the world famous town
of Marbella, near the hunting preserve of Serranía de Ronda and within the
Sierra Blanca area. This pueblo has the distinction of also being located
in the Rio Verde valley where its pure, untreated mountain waters are
considered to be healthy and of great benefit; hence it is common to see
people filling their own water bottles. Yet this mountain village, typical
of many in Andalucia, is best traversed on foot or by mule as the roads are
narrow, winding and sometimes precarious.
The town´s fiestas patronales lasts for approximately a week during which
time the main plaza is converted into a center of merriment. The local
band plays every day as it traverses the town´s streets; there are
competitions, games, lots of fanfare and music, and a reigning king
and queen. To enjoy a typical Andalucian town event, one should plan
to be in Istán for these fiestas.
