Almuñécar Tributes - Blas Infante Arch (Almunecar)

Blas Infante Arch
Getting There - Photos

This cream colored arch was built to commemorate, and is named for, Blas Infante, the father of Andalucia.

Born in Casares (Malaga) in 1885, Infante was an andalusist politician, writer, historian and musicologist. He is credited for having fought for what is today the "Estatuto de Autonomia de Andalucia" (Self-governing statute for Andalucia). The statute also embraced the current Andalucian flag and coat of arms as "national symbols", which were designed by Infante himself.

Blas Infante Arch
Blas Infante was among numerous political figures who were executed by Franco's forces when they took over Seville at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War (1936).

The arch, which is divided into three smaller arches, represents the three cultures that have had the biggest impact on the area, and Almunecar; the Romans, the Muslims and the Christians. These 20th century doors to Almunecar were built in 1997.

It reads: "Almunecar - Tierra de Luz, Paz Y Esperanza" - "Almunecar - Land of Light, Peace and Hope"
