Almuñécar Parks - Peña Escrita (Almunecar)
Getting There - Photos
Located high in the hills, behind Almunecar, is the spectacular Peña Escrita Natural Park. It is only a forty minute drive from town and the kids will love it. You can rent a cabana for the night or just go up for the day. It’s an excellent spot for a picnic and the views of the surrounding cliffs and Mediterranean Sea can’t be beat.
Not only is Peña Escrita a natural park with gorgeous views and great hiking, but you will also find a large variety of animals living here. As you come in the front gates the first thing you will see is the Ostrich habitat. You can get out of your car and walk right up to them. As you continue further inside the park you will find; bears, zebras, mountain goats, donkeys and horses among others.
After exploring the zoo, you can relax by the public swimming pool or eat in one of the parks two restaurants. Terraza Los Bañuelos is located by the pool and offers smaller meals and snacks while Mesón Cantalobos is a full service restaurant that offers a delicious menu of local cuisine.

Peña Escrita is only 13 km from Almunecar but because the road is winding and narrow in spots it will take you about 40 – 45 minutes to get there. Be careful driving as the road is a bit precarious in parts. Take the road leaving Almunecar in the direction of Jete. Once on the road, about 2 km from town, keep an eye out for a smaller road off to the left marked “Peña Escrita”. Follow the signs from this point.
